Visser, son of the timber merchant Tjebbe Visser and Wiepkje Hiemstra, first followed the courses at the Rijksnormaalschool Tick for Teachers and the Rijksnormaalschool for Applied Arts in Amsterdam and then studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts, also in Amsterdam.
