Original Vintage Small French Poster for "Gitanes" Cigarettes by Savignac 1953

More Views

Gitanes is a brand of French cigarettes, sold in many varieties of strengths and packages. Originally rolled with darker or brun (brown) tobacco, in contrast to ´blondes´. In honor of the name, the cover sports a silhouette of a Spanish gypsy woman playing the tambourine. The boxes have always featured the colours black, blue and white. Raymond Savignac was the last of the great Parisian poster artists. For several decades, their works lit up the métro, and those by Savignac were the most entertaining. unmissable. He claimed that his career began in 1949 with the poster, Monsavon Au Lait. With a comic picture of a cow, its udders emptying themselves into a bar of soap, he made a visual scandal – and he went on making them well into his 90s. This poster appears on page 162 in "Savignac Posters" Book published by Forney.
