More Views

A playful poster (ca. 1900) realized for the « A la Place Clichy » department store in Paris. Two children are shown playfully presenting a jack-in-the-box to a little dog. This mischiefvous scene brought a light-hearted appeal to the great Parisian shop. This poster was realized by Maurice Neumont (1868-1930) who grew up in Paris, where he took to artistic pursuits at a young age, doing chalk paintings in the streets. He rose to recognition as a painter and lithographer, and did many poster designs. He is remembered best through his affiliation with the Patriotic School, a group of artists whose propaganda posters encouraged the public to fight against Germany in World War I.
