Hendaye is a sea resort located in the French Basque Country on the Spanish border. The arrival of the railway in 1864 was pivotal in the development of the town. Because of the difference in gauges between Spain and the rest of Europe, all of the goods being shipped to Spain or vice-versa still have to be offloaded in Hendaye before being reloaded to their final destination. The beach in Hendaye has remained a prime tourist destination
