The company that was to become Martini & Rossi was established when Alessandro Martini, Teofilo Sola, and Luigi Rossi took over a Turin-based vermouth company in 1863. The enterprising trio started to export their vermouth to the U.S.A. that same year. The company moved to Pessione, closer to the port city of Genoa than Turin, in order to better export their products, and some five years later their vermouth was being shipped to Brazil, Argentina, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Egypt, and Turkey. Solas shares in the firm were bought by Rossi in 1879, and the company then became Martini & Rossi. Today Martini & Rossi is majority-owned by family-owned rum giant Bacardi Limited.
