Details

A charming BEFORE LETTERS poster, realized by Oge ca. 1900, advertising Dubonnet (Vin Tonique au Quinquina). Dubonnet is a sweet, wine-based aperitif. It is a blend of fortified wine, herbs, spices and quinine. Dubonnet was first sold in 1846 by Joseph Dubonnet, in response to a competition run by the French Government to find a way of persuading French Foreign Legionnaires in North Africa to drink quinine. Quinine combats malaria but is very bitter. This poster is featured in the book "Eugène Ogé Affichiste" (1998) on p. 115. Eugène Ogé (1861-1936) was a French poster artist with a unique and playful style. In 1902. he produced one of the best-known anticlerical images of its period La Lanterne. He also made a large number of commercial posters for products. (Wiki)
