Original Vintage French Advertising Poster "Guignolet Cointreau" by Jossot 1898

Guignolet was created in Angers (France) in the XVIIth century. It is an aperitif with a base of cherries maceration. In 1849, still in Angers, confectioner Adolphe Cointreau and his brother, Edouard-Jean created a brand new spirit from the fruits of the area. Immediate success led to the founding of the Cointreau distillery in Angers. Edouard-Jeani's son, Edouard, had noticed that traditional opaque liqueurs in elaborate bottles were losing favor with the public. He envisaged creating a dramatically different spirit - a crystal-clear liqueur - based on a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels from the most exotic parts of the world. The Guignolet Cointreau is thus a cocktail of both liquors. As the caption says it all on the glass : “Ask for a Cointreau!”
