Original American Pigment Print by M. Phillips ´Untitled´ Signed and Numbered

More Views

This untitled work on paper was created in tandem with a larger group of collages. It was made with the left over scraps of other drawings, pieces of paper found on the studio floor and the unused paint from works in progress. Its skewed grid structure and use of flat shapes give it the feeling of a folk singer covering Mondrian´s Broadway Boogie Woogie.
Matt Phillips’ work uses a visual vocabulary of geometric forms, shapes, and patterns. His paintings and drawings combine the formal rigor of Modernism with an open improvisation often associated with craft and folk art. His works are both personal and accessible and defy a single read. Matt has exhibited extensively throughout the United States in both solo and group exhibitions. He lives in New York City and is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Mt. Holyoke College.
